Google Search Tips -Search like an Expert

According to comScore report December 2007 Google makes up to 58 % of all searches made on the internet which is about 5.6 Billion core searches. Believe me it’s a huge share and there are people who don’t know there are other search engine exist on the internet. Yahoo comes next with 23 % share. Microsoft stood third with only 10% share. So Google is dominant search engine emperor and no one can reach even near to it.

But how you use world’s best search engine, do you only Google few simple words and phrases or you know that google offer lot more then what you expect from it. Here are some tips make use of it and search Google like you never did before, yes exactly like a technology geek.

[1] Precise Phrase:

To search for exact phrase simply do this, enclose the search phrase in Inverted Commas. Say if you are looking for marketing management then enclose this phrase like this;

“Marketing Management”

[2] Specific Document Types:

If you are looking to find result on a specific file type then this modifier is very useful, Google has expanded the number of non-HTML file types searched to 12 file formats. Google now searches Microsoft Office, PostScript, Corel WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, PDF formats etc. For instance you may only search for information on Marketing Management on power point presentation then type in search box;

“Marketing Management” filetype:ppt

[3] Eliminate Words:

Lets take the above example once again, say if you want to search for article about marketing management but want to exclude any result which contains the term planning then put the sign “-” in front of the word you want to exclude

Marketing Management – Planning

[4] Synonyms:

If you want to include some other similar words or synonyms in your search result then simply put the “~” sign in front of your search phrase

“Marketing Management” ~ Strategic

[5] Specific Site Search:

Usually every site put a search button for searching specific phrase in the site but if any site doses not support a built in search feature then you can use google for that purpose. To search for specific phrase in a particular site simply use site: www.website.com modifier. Like to search for phrase Marketing Management in the site www.marketingpower.com you need to type in search box;

Marketing Management site: www.marketingpower.com

[6] This OR That:
Use OR operator to include one or more then one term in your search result, like;

Marketing Management OR Sales Management

[7] Word Definitions:

To see a definition for a word or phrase, simply type the word “define” then a space, and then the word(s) you want defined. If Google has seen a definition for the word or phrase on the Web, it will retrieve that information and display it at the top of your search results, you can also get a list of definitions by including the special operator “define” type your search as;

[8] Calculator:

To use Google’s built-in calculator function, simply enter the calculation you’d like done into the search box and hit the Enter key or click on the Google Search button. The calculator can solve math problems involving basic arithmetic, more complicated math, units of measure and conversions, and physical constants. Type your search as;

[9] Currency Conversion

Google has a built-in currency converter, simply enter the conversion you’d like done into the Google search box and hit click the search button. Here are some sample queries:

50 USD in GBP
50 GBP in Philippine Currency

[10] Number Range Search

The Number Range Search operator searches for results containing numbers in a given range. You can use set ranges for everything from dates to weights. Just add two numbers, separated by two periods, with no spaces, into the search box along with your search terms, and specify a unit of measurement or some other indicator of what the number range represents. For example; search for DVD player that costs between $50 and $100 type in search box as:

DVD player $50..$100

[11] Link Search

This one is very helpful for all of you blogger out there, I know if you are a WordPress blogger then you can easily find information about who has linked you from your Dashboard but google search is another method with you can see who have link your blog. Type your search as:

link:www.yourdomainname.com

[12] Other Search Features

I’m Feeling Lucky

Probably you have notice the I’m Feeling Lucky button on google search page. It helps in taking you directly to the first web page Google returned for your query. You will not see the other search results at all. An I’m Feeling Lucky search means you spend less time searching for web pages and more time looking at them. For example, to find the homepage for BWM Car Manufacturer simply enter BMW into the search field and click on the I’m Feeling Lucky button. Google takes you directly to www.bmw.com the official homepage of BMW car Manufacturer.

For finding your favorite books use

For searching of scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources, including theses, books, abstracts and articles use

For searching specific products, including price and their availability use
